A Center of Excellence, we belong to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s network of Prevention Research Centers. In the UNM Department of Pediatrics, we’re part of the Division of Prevention and Population Sciences. What is Prevention Research? Prevention science identifies risk factors for poor health and finds ways to protect against them. Together, the UNM PRC and its partners develop, test, publicize and implement healthy-living strategies. Here, researchers find the infrastructure and collaboration to carry out community-engaged work in: Disease prevention Dissemination and implementation of research Education Health communication Health promotion Policy and systems change Social marketing A multidisciplinary team of faculty and staff work with underrepresented communities in every New Mexico county. Our Community Advisory Council [PDF] helps ensure our research is sensitive to cultural distinctions, acceptable to participants and sustainable. Cooperative Agreement The University of New Mexico Prevention Research Center is supported by CDC cooperative agreement number U48-DP-005034. Research Priorities Communities help develop our research agenda, which includes: Adolescent and school health Alcohol and substance abuse prevention Injury and violence prevention Nutrition, physical activity and obesity prevention Tobacco use prevention Mission The mission of the UNM PRC is to address the health promotion and disease prevention needs of New Mexico communities through participatory, science-based, health promotion and disease prevention research. We fulfill this mission through collaboration, training, dissemination and evaluation activities. Consortium The UNM PRC is part of a consortium that includes: New Mexico Center for the Advancement of Research Engagement and Science on Health Disparities ( NM CARES Health Disparities Center ) The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Center for Health Policy This unique consortium promotes prevention, research, policy and practice related to health and well-being in New Mexico.
